Chicago-based artist Lincoln Schatz has been drawing attention with his large-scale generative art installations that visualize memory. The artist has recently been commissioned by Dallas developer Billingsley Company to create one of the largest new media works ever installed in a public space. Due to open on March 29, Schatz’s Collision of Memory will be a permanent installation that flanks each side of the entrance to the elevator area of One Arts Plaza, a $125 million multiuse structure, the first of four residential and office buildings on over 10 acres at the eastern edge of the Dallas Arts District. From that moment onwards, two high definition cameras will record the edifice’s lobby activity, on a daily basis, during a minimum of 8 years. Selected according to specific chance operations, segments of the footage will be displayed on two 9 x 9 foot video walls in four overlapping layers: one from the last two minutes and three from a distant time period. While standing between the two screens, viewers will see themselves along with visual memories of that place. Continuously washing over one another in painterly portraits of individuals and the surrounding environment, these images relate past and present in uncanny ways, creating a non-linear impression of history. - Miguel Amado

The New York Times’ writer William L. Hamilton’s article “What Money Can’t Buy” chronicles these rough-and-tumble times for the city’s ultra rich. From Central Park-side real estate to 250mph Bugattis, it seems the recipients of this year’s massive Wall Street bonuses may have a tougher time spending their newfound wealth than they may have hoped. Want a new Jeff Koons to grace your foyer? His next dozen pieces are spoken for. John Walker 1805 Reserve? The 45-year vintage (from distilleries that no longer exist) was supposed to be available already but now may never. Trying to get your hands on a “starter” jet - the Eclipse 500 or the Cessna Citation? You may find yourself waiting until 2010. And even if it’s not superfluous luxuries you’re after, it seems even upper-crust residences are becoming harder to snag; the city’s top brokers are noticing that $10 Million dollar apartments are only going to buyers with $100M net worth, as co-op boards are expecting their tenants to be charitable enough to give away what they pay in rent every year. One way to celebrate Black History month in February is to invest in a piece of African-American fine art. Swann Galleries in New York is holding an auction devoted entirely to African-American Fine Art on February 6. The sale includes over 200 prints, sculptures, drawings and paintings. The sale includes prints from Jacob Lawrence which are estimated to sell for up to $160,000 and collages and oil paintings from Romare Bearden, estimated to sell for up to $100,000. My favorites are the wood sculptures. A mahogany Nude Torso which is is believed to be the first sculpture by Elizabeth Catlett ever to come to auction is estimated to sell for $100,000 to $150,000, but my favorite piece is New Moon, 1933, shown here from Leslie Garland Bolling which should bring between $20,000-$30,000. The works of art will be on public exhibition at Swann Galleries from January 31 to February 2. Swann is also holding their twelfth annual sale of Printed & Manuscript African Americana on February 27. This sale includes a copy of Langston Hughes’s rarest book, The Dream Keeper and a large archive of jazz great Fats Waller material, including two pieces of music and signed documents.

In the manner of the money series by Anthony White and the One Thousand paintings by Sala, comes the Art Initials series by the artist Mart in Switzerland.

Here’s the details of Art Initial paintings..

Each letter-pair exists only once – its portrait is a one-ofa-kind. Mart paints a letter pair from AA to ZZ on 676 30-by-30-centimeter, white-primed canvases – all in the same font and size. Internet users can order their selected letter pair in the colors, navy blue, midnight black, or Kashmir beige.

The prices for the pictures are not fixed; they develop dynamically. The more pictures sold and the more popular the letters, the higher the price. If a picture is sold, all other available pictures increase in price by EUR 1, and pictures with the same first or second letter increase by EUR 5 each. The currently least expensive letter pair costs 41 euros.

When all pictures are sold, the website is to continue as a community: the buyers of the pictures around the globe can then compare notes with other “initials” owners and tell why they chose their specific letter pair. It is not mandatory to select one’s own initials. A quick check with a search engine delivers a vast array of meaning for each letter pair these days. The one-of-a-kind therefore becomes an even more personal commodity.
